Mission Statement of the department

The Department of Curriculum Studies and Teaching is committed to the production of qualified teachers for the Cameroon Education system.  Its goals are therefore stated as follows:

  1. To prepare development oriented teachers of quality for the secondary schools and teacher training colleges as well as university level education.
  2. To promote pedagogic excellence at all levels of the Cameroon educational system.
  3. To carry out outreach and particularly research activities for the improvement of the teaching and learning process at all levels of the Cameroon education system.

Objectives

  • To prepare development-oriented teachers of quality for Secondary, teacher training and University Institutions.

DISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Mission Statement for the Distance Education Programme for Nursery and Primary School Teachers

We believe that a well-defined and articulated mission statement is essential to the development of a successful distance learning strategic plan. On this account, the Faculty of education strongly believes that to address quality education in nursery and primary schools, the University of Buea should take the lead to open up university education to practicing teachers in the field for this level of education.

Teachers in nursery and primary schools are left on their own without opportunities for academic or professional growth. Today, the nursery and primary schools curricula are pressed with increasing new disciplines, such as environmental education, peace education, human rights, HIV/AIDS, new approaches to the teaching of mathematics, and Information Technology as a pedagogical tool and as a curriculum content material. There is an urgent need for increasing academic socialization of these practicing teachers in the 21st century.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATIONS AND ADMINISTRATION

Mission Statement

The mission of the department of EFA is to strengthen administrative, management and leadership capacity at the various levels of education in the country through teaching, research and outreach.

Objectives

  • To equip would-be practicing educational administrators with competencies required for effective/efficient educational management and leadership
  • To provide continuing professional development opportunities to practicing educational administrators at all levels of schooling within the public and private sector.
  • To strengthen the research capacity of students enrolled in the programme.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY

Mission Statement

The Department of Educational Psychology seeks to train educational and counseling psychologists as well as special needs education teachers and personnel for both educational institutions, specialized services for persons with disabilities and other social services in the society.  This is done through the undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered in the various programmes.  The undergraduate programmes, B.Ed. in Educational Psychology and in special needs Education, provide opportunities for majors and minors with course and related experiences that give increase understanding of teaching and learning in educational settings.

The emphasis on both theoretical and practical training ensures a solid foundation for advanced field study leading to careers in the field of educational psychology, guidance and counseling and special education.  There are possibilities for inter-disciplinary or combined degree/double majors.

The Department also seeks to promote research in the fields of educational psychology, special education and counseling psychology, through its postgraduate programmes.  It also seeks to train personnel for services in Higher Education.  To make its programmes relevant to local and national needs, the Department undertakes outreach activities in the local communities and schools.

Objectives

  • To offer undergraduate majors and minors with courses and related experiences that provide:
    • Increase understanding of teaching and human learning in educational setting;
    • Solid foundation for advanced study leading to careers in field of educational psychology;
    • Possibilities for inter-disciplinary or combined degrees / double majors.
