Food Science and Nutrition<\/p>\n<p>Master\u2019s in Public Health<\/p>\n<p><strong>DOCTOR OF MEDICINE DEGREE (MD)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Doctor of Medicine<\/p>\n<p><strong>DEPARTMENT OF NURSING <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mission <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To train highly qualified nurses capable of providing holistic high quality nursing care in diverse clinical situations locally, nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specific Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the four \u2013 year programme, the graduate nurse should be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Practice skilled, personalised, dynamic and comprehensive holistic nursing care in any clinical setting.<\/li>\n<li>Apply the nursing process in planning nursing care for clients in the hospital and community setting<\/li>\n<li>Utilise scientific principles in the problem solving process to nursing action in hospitals, communities and other settings where health care is provided.<\/li>\n<li>Exercise sound clinical judgement when making decisions on behalf of the client assigned to his or her care<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate leadership and management skills in the coordination of nursing care delivery and when assuming the team leader position<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate professional ethics and moral judgement in patient care decisions and relationships with professional colleagues. Exhibit professional ethnics and inter-disciplinary accountability in patient care.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate leadership and management competencies and also;<\/li>\n<li>Co-ordinate delivery of high quality and holistic care.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct basic nursing research for the improvement of nursing care in hospitals and community settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our mission is to advance the scientific knowledge of the student through quality research and teaching. All these will be done while collaborating with other universities and the community in key areas of health. We shall contribute to the development of health policies at the local, national and international levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective of Degree Programme:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This programme is to train competent medical laboratory scientists.\u00a0 It entails exposing the students to multi-disciplinary Biomedical Science Subjects.\u00a0 Its essential aim is to study the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and control of endemic diseases in the community.<\/p>\n<h3>DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND HYGIENE<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our mission is to improve health care through the training of public health experts on common communicable and environmentally related diseases, including non-communicable health conditions of public health interest. Candidates acquire elaborate knowledge on project proposal development and implementation, epidemiological trends and monitoring of common health conditions, including knowledge on research and the distribution of health resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PROGRAMME IN MEDICINE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our mission is to improve health care of Cameroonians through the training of high quality medical doctors with appropriate skills and competence in the management of common health conditions.\u00a0 This will be achieved through cooperation with hospitals and medical institutions in and out of Cameroon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectives of the MD degree<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is expected that on completion of the MD programme, the graduates will have attained knowledge, attitudes, and skills as described in the following five areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Basic medical sciences\n<ol>\n<li>Obtain basic information on body systems;<\/li>\n<li>Acquire a scientific approach for actions from hypotheses, which lead to self-directed learning as well as prognosis, diagnosis, and therapy with respect to medical conditions in both sexes;<\/li>\n<li>Process information on normal and abnormal function in molecular, somatic, biological, mental and social structure and function in deriving diagnosis;<\/li>\n<li>Utilize information technology for information management in medical education.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Clinical and therapeutic methods, procedures, and investigations\n<ol>\n<li>Demonstrate competence in the management of medical emergencies including first aid and perform simple clinical procedures;<\/li>\n<li>Assess the health status of individuals and groups through observation and data collection from sources including the medical history, clinical examinations, laboratory investigations, and significant others within the dynamics of patients\u2019 relationships;<\/li>\n<li>Engage in medical problem solving process in order to derive a clinical diagnosis;<\/li>\n<li>Prepare and or implement a plan of patient management and care including appropriate referral.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Community health and family medicine\n<ol>\n<li>Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for the rights of individuals and groups in a multicultural society;<\/li>\n<li>Maintain effective doctor-patient relationships especially those involving patient education;<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with individuals and communities in identifying and achieving defined health goals;<\/li>\n<li>Utilize epidemiological data, and cultural determinants of health in appraising the level of wellness, illness and health in a society;<\/li>\n<li>Apply the principles of epidemiology and public health and an awareness of the social impact of illness to the practice of medicine in the community.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Communication skills\n<ol>\n<li>Communicate effectively with patients, families, and other members of the healthcare team;<\/li>\n<li>Prepare clear and concise records, reports, letters of referral and other patient related documents.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Professional competence\n<ol>\n<li>Knowledge of the healthcare system and ethical\/legal issues, socio-economic conditions that impact on the provision of care;<\/li>\n<li>Critically appraise the published scientific literature;<\/li>\n<li>Keep abreast of social, medical, and technological advances through participation in continuing medical education and research;<\/li>\n<li>Practice medicine within the ambit of professional medical ethics and the law;<\/li>\n<li>Maintain quality assurance initiatives;<\/li>\n<li>Function as a member of the healthcare team.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Specific objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Integrated basic medical sciences\n<ol>\n<li>To acquire a scientific approach to decisions for diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis on health conditions;<\/li>\n<li>To apply relevant knowledge from the biomedical and behavioural sciences to the care of individuals, families, and groups in the community and hospital settings;<\/li>\n<li>To utilize informatics in the management of medical information as well as office practice;<\/li>\n<li>To differentiate normal and abnormal structure and function in biomedical, somatic and mental operations of the human body systems, male and female and throughout the life cycle;<\/li>\n<li>To recognize the progression in the disorder of human function because of biology of disease.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Communications\n<ol>\n<li>To prepare clear and concise records, reports, letters of referral and other patient-related documents;<\/li>\n<li>To communicate effectively with patients families, and other members of the health care team;<\/li>\n<li>To conduct patient education especially in areas of child health and chronic diseases;<\/li>\n<li>To enhance the doctor-patient relationship through effective communication skills;<\/li>\n<li>To engage in referral and consultation with other members of the health care team to the benefit of the patient.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Family and communication\n<ol>\n<li>To empower individuals, families and communities to develop self-reliance regarding their own health care;<\/li>\n<li>To plan, and or engage in health promotion activities aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles in individuals and communities;<\/li>\n<li>To collaborate with individuals and communities in identifying and achieving defined health goals;<\/li>\n<li>To apply the principles of public health and epidemiology with an awareness of the social impact of illness on the practice of medicine in the community;<\/li>\n<li>To demonstrate sensitivity and respect for the rights of the individuals and groups;<\/li>\n<li>To appraise critically the folk traditions and alternative therapies related to the health that exists within a community.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Clinical methods and procedures\n<ol>\n<li>To demonstrate competence in the initial management of medical emergencies, especially as a first responder;<\/li>\n<li>To engage in effective medical problem solving and clinical diagnosis;<\/li>\n<li>To assess the health status of individuals and groups through observation, and data communities;<\/li>\n<li>To prescribe therapeutic methods on the basis of appropriate investigative procedures;<\/li>\n<li>To recognize the role of nutrition in maintaining wellness, prescribing diet therapies where they are relevant;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Professional competence\n<ol>\n<li>To participate in health care research;<\/li>\n<li>To practice medicine within the ambit of
