Background

To increase efficiency and effectiveness in attaining its mission, the University of Buea, has institutionalized a competitive grant for staff to innovate in the creation of research incubators that can also generate income to the university. This is referred to as the Income-Generating Projects: Start-Up Research Incubators funding scheme at the University of Buea.

The pioneer winner of this grant is Dr. Ewane Divine through a project entitled: “Project to Support a Business Incubator Approach to the Teaching of Livestock Production at the University of Buea”.

The Support Programme for the University of Buea Livestock Production and Agripreneurship Students Business Incubator (SP-UB- LPA-SBI) is conceived as a research center at the University of Buea, to manage the grant, of the Income-Generating Projects: Start-Up Research Incubators, and transition it, to operate and manage other business incubators, embracing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Specific Objectives

1. Manage a revolving fund, to boost the investment portfolio of the students participating in the University of Buea Livestock Production and Agripreneurship Students Business Incubator (UB- LPA-SBI)

2. Manage the Support Project for the University of Buea Livestock Production and Agripreneurship Students Business Incubator (SP-UB- LPA-SBI) and transition it to operate and manage other business incubators embracing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

3. Promote and manage initiatives that generate revenue for the University of Buea and enhance graduate self-employability.

4. Support the University of Buea in its dedication to the continuous quest for excellence in research, the promotion of moral and human values, and service to the community.

Ongoing Projects

Project to Support a Business Incubator Approach to the Teaching of Livestock Production at the University of Buea

Project with seed grant from the University of Buea. This project aims to ‘organize a sustainable way forward for the University of Buea Livestock Production and Agripreneurship Students Business Incubator (UB- LPA-SBI)” It supports students with loans that facilitate the implementation of a business plan at the university campus. Students repay the loan with 5% interest in a revolving fund and take home the profit.

Programme supporting the Department of Animal Science to realize innovations in teaching, research and community engagement.Accordion Title

  • Collaborative programme with growing number of partners.
  • Ongoing effort with the Centre for Agricultural Excellence and Promotion of Environmental Resilience – Cooperative Society (BOD) “CAEPERFARMING-COOP (BOD) has produced the first calf by artificial insemination at the University of Buea.
  • Collaboration with the Professor Fujii Agroecology laboratory supported the reconstruction of pens for a modern snailery.at the department of Animal Science
  • Lighting of Animal Farm buildings at the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Farm (FAVM -TRF).Executed with funds from the University of Buea Seed Grant, for the purpose of enhancing security on the farm.
  • Taking an additional stand during the University Open day to increase visibility of the Department of Animal Science.
  • A website with focus to enhance visibility of the Department of Animal Science is ongoing.

University of Buea Livestock Development Market Place -UB LDMP (Working to become the University of Buea Development Market Place-UB-DMP)-A University Extension Programme.

  • Collaborative programme which focuses on an ecosystem approach to the development and uptake of innovation- innovation platforms.
  • Identifies and supports key research leading to business startups in the University of Buea and Mentee Universities
  • Facilitates continuing education for livestock production stakeholders.
  • Works with stakeholders to set production goals and achieve them.
  • Mobilizes adjoining communities to take responsibility for their own development
    • Achievements
      • Markets to enhance exchange of ideas between graduate student of Livestock Production and adjoining communities have been organized.
      • Potential Partners and stakeholders have been Identified
      • An MoU has been signed between UB and the Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries, Livestock and Forests of Cameroon better known in the French Acronym CAPEF. SP UB LPA SBI is paying for UB’s annual membership dues to CAPEF.
      • The First Intra African Seminar Workshop on Ostrich Production in Cameroon is being organized at the university of Buea, come May 31, 2025

About The Principal Investigator (Ewane Divine (JP) PhD )

Dr. Divine Ewane is currently a Lecturer, and Acting, Head of Department (chair) of Animal Science in the University of Buea Cameroon. His background is Animal Science and his passion is grassroots empowerment. His research focus is on Feed and Livestock Resources Development.

He has taught Animal Production at the University of Buea, Catholic University Institute of Buea (CUIB), and Alex Ekweme Federal University Ndufu Alike, Ikwo, Nigeria. He has also been working with many grassroots communities and industries on merging environmental conservation concerns with sustainable development imperatives since 1993.

He is skilled in job creation (with additional in-service training from Golder Meir Mount Carmel Institute, Haifa, Israel), student business incubators (with additional in-service training on Corporate Management for Africa with AOTS-Tokyo Kenshu Centre, Japan) and productive negotiations between state and non-state actors in sustainable development agendas (with additional in-service training on Leadership, Organizational Change and Interactive Planning in Natural Resources Management at the International Agricultural Centre Wageningen, The Netherlands.).

Since 2007, he has been a consultant with the Support Programme for Rural Employment (PADER) implemented by the National Employment Fund, Cameroon. He is also trained in Monitoring and Evaluation of projects, as well as in Gender Sensitive Participatory Approaches to Sustainable Development. He has also been the M & E officer for two multi-donor trust fund projects of The West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD) implemented jointly by the University of Buea, Cameroon, University of Ibadan Nigeria, and Njala University, Sierra-Leone.

He is the pioneer winner of the University of Buea Competitive Grants for Research Incubator with project entitled “Project to Support a Business Incubator Approach to the Teaching of Livestock Production at the University Of Buea, Cameroon”. He leads a team of eleven scientists to accomplish the task.
